My tips on writing a press release can best be summed up this way:
- Give editors a story that is likely to be of interest to their readers. It really is that simple.
Editors are more likely to use your press release if it's tailor-made for their readers. Localizing press releases is the best way to land publicity in weekly and daily newspapers.
Insider Tip! Simply change the headline and at least part of the contents for each niche so that the relevance to that group jumps out unmistakably. For example, you might make your title "Ten Investment Tips for Christians" for the Christian media.
Insider Tip! Another way to tailor releases is by localizing them. Unlike most other media sources, newspapers require a very large and steady flow of new information coming in on a daily basis. National publicity is harder, especially in mainstream publications. You compete against everyone in the nation.
Look for government or trade association statistics you can quote, or do your own survey and publicize the results. Here are some fictitious examples for a video on improving children's math skills:
- "Alabama Students Rank 55th in US for Math" (to Alabama media)
- "Iowa Students Rank 13th in US for Math" (to Iowa media)
- "Texas Students Rank 55th in US for Math" (to Texas media)
- You must send your press release to the RIGHT magazines, newsletters and newspapers.
Insider Tip! Target both media companies AND individual journalists who cover your subject. For instance, if your subject is travel you'll want editors of travel magazines and travel editors of general interest daily newspapers and non-travel magazines. (i.e. the travel editor at Business Week, Time, Newsweek).
- You must be persistent; you must follow through.
Insider Tip! What you're going for here is consistency - every week you drop out your press release. Some will hit big. Others will bomb. Most will be somewhere in between. But it's the consistency that counts.
